It’s cooling off outside, kids are back in school, and it’s treat season!
Every year, it’s been engrained in us that this time of year is “flu season”.. “get your shot” has been marketed since July, and the pressure is on to ‘get prepared’ – but how prepared are you actually getting when it comes to this season?

Why is it that some people always seem to get sick, while others never seem to get sick at all?
We are complex beings as humans, but we all require the same basic needs to survive: SLEEP, GOOD NUTRITION, and WATER.
Sometimes our lifestyle choices throw us for a loop that may eventually turn into a downward spiral that seems to deplete everything from us – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually – leaving us completely out of balance.
No person lives the same lifestyle as the next, but making simple changes, taking baby steps to ‘better’, while asking questions along the way, can bring you to a “new you” down the road.
What the Research Shows
“Stressed out? Lonely or depressed? Don’t be surprised if you come down with something. Psychologists in the field of “psychoneuroimmunology” have shown that state of mind affects one’s state of health.
In the early 1980s, psychologist Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, PhD, and immunologist Ronald Glaser, PhD, of the Ohio State University College of Medicine, were intrigued by animal studies that linked stress and infection. From 1982 through 1992, these pioneer researchers studied medical students. Among other things, they found that the students’ immunity went down every year under the simple stress of the three-day exam period. Test takers had fewer natural killer cells, which fight tumors and viral infections. What’s sugar got to do with it?
Remember when I mentioned “treats”?
When we think about all of the activities and gatherings that go on throughout the cooler months – school parties, weddings, trick-or-treating, all the holidays and all the sugar that comes with it, it’s no mistake that sugar can take a toll on our bodies. In fact, “Eating or drinking too much sugar curbs immune system cells that attack bacteria. Feed Your Body What It Needs
Sometimes we forget how much of what we eat actually impacts our health. Think about it – your body needs fuel (food with nutrients) to operate and create new cells. You may have heard the saying, “you are what you eat”, and this is so true when you realize that the very cells your body is making is created from the very “food” you’re putting into your mouth. So, if you eat CRAP, your body will likely feel like crap.
CRAP stands for:

What About Orange Juice?
Why I say “no way” to OJ..
Unless you’re squeezing fresh juice from that orange that you grew in your orange grove or if the orange is from a trusted organic source, I wouldn’t bother putting it into my body for the vitamin C. Yes, vitamin C is awesome for you – it’s actually an antioxidant and can help to strengthen the immune system. However, been to countries where the American juice companies source their oranges and seeing how GREEN the oranges were on the trucks heading to the processing plant from the groves, I can’t even begin to imagine what all ‘processing’ they put into creating the final product that you find on the grocery store shelf. It’s not fresh, and unfortunately so many juice drinks out there contain a boatload of sugar, that, you guessed it, depletes your immune system.

General Tips to get to sleep and sleep better
-Stop using all technology 30 minutes before bed
-No caffeine after 3pm
-No sugar after 4pm
-Sleep only an hour longer during the weekend than your latest weekday wake-up time
Great Sleep should consist of about a third of your life. That’s 8-hours in every 24-hour period.
It is no accident that we are designed this way. If we neglect these precious hours, the remaining hours spent will not be as productive or enjoyable. In addition, every other aspect of health will be impacted with improper sleep habits.
